SINGING TO GOD!

In the church today there is much discussion over what is the right kind of praise music to offer to God. Hymns? Choruses? Sometimes these discussions cause a split in the church. This should never be. I was reminded of Psalm 150. In this Psalm we are given instruction as to how God wants to be praised.

First, let’s define praise. It means, “an expression of warm approval or admiration.” When I sing to God, I am expressing warm admiration to his holy name.

There are many ways to do this. Twelve times in this Psalm we are reminded to “praise God”. We are to praise him in his sanctuary (church), in his heaven, for his mighty works, for his unequaled greatness. How do we to do this?

With dancing (yes it’s okay to tap your toes in church) and with every kind of musical instrument. A ram’s horn, lyre, harp, tambourine, strings, flutes, cymbals. Sounds to me as though God enjoys some lively praise to him.

Colossians 3:16b reminds us that our words matter to God as well. We are to “sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.” God seems to cover ALL types of musical choice. I think the bottom line is this: God enjoys hearing us give warm and heartfelt praise to him, no matter the musical choice we prefer.

Let’s blend our hearts and songs together and lift up our voice as one to the Great God of the Universe, and do so in unity!

“Praise God from whom ALL blessings flow……..”

  1. Marilyn: Thank you for writing this! I am often saddened by how our enemy has divided Christians over music preferences! He is given glory by our praises, no matter the type of music, because praise is from our hearts - for HIS glory!!!
    (P.S. Love you!)
